Our Year 10 boys’ football team faced Cardinal Wiseman School on 29th March in the prestigious Baxland Cup at Hendon FC.
As previously reported, they had progressed through four very tough matches, which included beating last year’s champions. However, their last two results in the Barnet league and cup, were rather one-sided in favour of the opposition and missing a key player through injury, was going to make this a tough game.
The boys ran on to the fantastic 4G pitch and prepared for the match. The game was tight in the early stages which suited us as we began to frustrate the opposition, carving out half-chances, limiting our opponents to one shot off-target. 0-0 at half-time, with EBS in the ascendency. The team who capitalised on one chance, was going to win. The second half started brightly, but chances were hard to come by. As the game developed, both sides looked weary and spaces started to appear all over the pitch. Unfortunately, Cardinal Wiseman took advantage of a ball through the middle, which their forward chipped over our keeper and ended up in the net, 1-0 to Cardinal Wiseman with just 10 minutes remaining. Rather than give up, EBS pushed for an equaliser, but time got the better of us and we couldn’t take it to extra-time.
Despite the loss, I could not have been more pleased with my players; a genuine squad, with a ‘team’ mentality who tried their very best to win. They did themselves and their school proud. Well done to all members of the squad. Let’s go again next year!
