Thrilling Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial

East Barnet School > Teaching and Learning > Humanities > Thrilling Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial

On the 22nd March, a team of 14 talented students from Years 8, 9, and 10 proudly represented our school in the Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition. The event took place at the Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court, where schools from across the region gathered to showcase their legal skills in a highly competitive and intellectually stimulating environment.

The competition provided our students with a unique opportunity to step into the shoes of legal professionals, taking on roles such as prosecution and defence lawyers, witnesses, legal advisers, ushers, and magistrates. Through careful preparation, teamwork, and dedication, our team delivered an outstanding performance, demonstrating their ability to think critically, argue persuasively, and engage with the judicial process in a realistic courtroom setting.

Our students had been preparing rigorously for this competition every Friday after school since December 2024. Their commitment and perseverance were evident as they worked tirelessly to refine their legal arguments, practise courtroom procedures, and develop their advocacy skills. They had the privilege of being coached by Judge David Radford and KC Nadine Radford, whose expert guidance and mentorship played a crucial role in their success.

Throughout the day, our students faced off against other schools, presenting their cases with confidence and composure. The competition’s judges, who were real magistrates and court judges, commended our team for their strong advocacy skills, thorough understanding of legal proceedings, and impressive courtroom presence.

The judges provided highly positive feedback, praising our students’ preparation and delivery. Comments included:

“Very good preparation”

“Highly rehearsed”

“Accurate and naturally asked questions”

“Good discussion and natural flow of questioning”

“The usher was excellent and scored very highly”

“Both teams worked well and scored highly”

“Defendant was well consistent and well presented; defence closing speech was good”

After an intense and closely contested competition, our team secured a remarkable second-place finish. This achievement reflects their hard work, determination, and ability to rise to the challenge under pressure. The experience not only enhanced their understanding of the legal system but also helped develop essential skills such as public speaking, teamwork, and critical thinking.

We are incredibly proud of our students for their dedication and success in this competition. A huge thank to our mentors who supported them throughout their journey, and to the organisers of the event for providing such an invaluable learning experience.

Bar Mock Trial

Before the Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial, 14 of our Sixth Form students participated in the Bar Mock Trial Competition, which took place at the Crown Court in Inner Temple on the 16th of November 2024. This prestigious competition challenged students to engage with the complexities of criminal law by preparing and presenting two full trials in a real courtroom setting.

Competing against several schools from the region, our students took on roles such as barristers, witnesses, and court staff, demonstrating their ability to analyse legal arguments, question witnesses, and deliver compelling advocacy. The experience was both challenging and rewarding, offering them a deeper understanding of courtroom procedures and the responsibilities of legal professionals. Their hard work and preparation paid off, as they delivered confident and well-structured cases.

We commend our Sixth Form students for their enthusiasm, commitment, and ability to perform under pressure. Their participation in the Bar Mock Trial Competition was an invaluable experience that further developed their legal skills and confidence in public speaking.
