Careers

A modern foreign language combines well with a wide range of subjects, both at A-Level and degree level, with languages highly valued by universities. Being able to speak another language makes you highly employable in a wide range of careers, as the skills and abilities that you gain from studying a language at A-Level are extremely versatile. According to the British Council, French, German and Spanish are three of the five most important languages for the British to learn. It is often stated that an inability to trade in languages other than British damages the UK’s export performance. This means that employees who use languages at work earn on average 8% more than others. Living in a global multilingual society, the ability to communicate in more than one language has never been more important.

Course Overview

Taking A-Level German offers an exciting chance to enhance your language skills while gaining a broader understanding of the world around you. Building on the vocabulary and grammar learned in Key Stage 4, this course delves into a range of important global topics, such as immigration, politics, and social justice. You will also explore the diverse cultures and histories of German-speaking countries, deepening your appreciation for their traditions, arts, and way of life.

The AQA A-Level German curriculum invites you to engage with contemporary issues from a linguistic standpoint, developing both your critical thinking and communication abilities. Through analysis and discussion, you will explore how language shapes our view of the world and influences societal issues. In addition to refining your speaking and listening skills, the course requires you to study at least one work of German literature, offering a chance to engage with influential German writers and their impact on world literature.

You will also work with authentic resources, including films, news reports, and music, providing a more nuanced understanding of current global events and cultural movements. This dynamic approach makes the course relevant and engaging, while also promoting intercultural awareness. Beyond language proficiency, the A-Level prepares you for future academic and professional paths, including fields like international relations, translation, and education. It’s not just about mastering a language – it’s about gaining new perspectives and opening doors to a wider range of opportunities in our interconnected world.
