Humanities

Welcome to the EBS Humanities Faculty! We hope to provide you with all the information you need about this faculty, but if you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact us.

Humanities encompasses Geography, History and Religious Education, with more details of each below.

Geography

Through delivery of a broad, balanced, engaging and challenging curriculum we aim to equip students with the necessary geographical skills and knowledge to create lifelong learners who actively participate in their knowledge construction. We aim to provide students with the ability to ‘Think Geographically’ a uniquely powerful way of seeing the world. We aim to engender excitement, creativity and critical thinking about the world that will equip young people to make their own way in it. Students learn where places are, how places and landscapes are formed, how people and their environment interact and how a diverse range of economies, societies and environments are interconnected.

History

Our aim is to inspire our students to develop a love of History and appreciate its importance in understanding the issues that confront us in today’s world. Our curriculum not only provides students with an enriching and coherent knowledge of Britain’s past but our aims of fostering curiosity, passion and critical thinking, equips students with the skills they need to better understand the world they live in. This includes: the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time. Our teaching approach also encourages students to rigorously examine historical evidence and critically analyse historical opinions, which not only helps students deepen their awareness of historical matter, but allows them to challenge preconceptions and make better informed judgments of the past, a vital approach to help young people move beyond their own experience to be prepared for participation in modern society.

Religious Education

The Religious Education department seeks to provide the intellectual and spiritual space for students to explore the questions that are fundamental to our existence. We seek to create an environment in which students are able to systematically question, argue, debate and formulate their ideas in an academically rigorous manner. Religious Education teaches students about the six main faiths of the world and asks them to explore these ideologies. The students are encouraged to analyse their own beliefs in light of their own learning. Religious Education also looks at the impact of these beliefs on different people’s lives. It asks students to analyse the world around them and be aware of religious and non-religious beliefs.
