Careers

At EBS, careers education is a central part of school life. We provide independent, impartial guidance to help students of all ages explore their strengths and passions, and to plan for their future.

From Years 7 – 9 the focus is on career exploration, and students do this through our online platform Unifrog, which helps to identify skills and career interests. We also work with employers, training providers and local colleges to offer real-world experiences. All students complete work experience from Year 10 and meet with our independent Careers Advisor.

Key Stage 3 English

Course Overview

Our Key Stage 3 (KS3) English curriculum is underpinned by the four strands of literacy skills: reading, writing, speaking and listening.

Students develop the skills to communicate clearly and confidently in both social and academic contexts. Progress is assessed through regular formative assessments that evaluate key literacy skills through a diverse range of tasks, helping to prepare students for formative assessment weeks. Through engaging units of work, a wide range of literature and language topics, and fortnightly Let’s Think in English lessons, students build proficiency across all four literacy skills while developing a genuine enjoyment of English.

Students study a diverse range of modern and pre-19th century texts, including fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, and media texts, with a strong focus on reading for pleasure. Lessons encourage creative thinking, discussion, and curiosity, helping students to see reading as meaningful and enjoyable. Reading skills are further embedded beyond the classroom through weekly home learning on Sparx Reader, which requires 30 minutes of careful, independent reading. This is supported by whole-school literacy initiatives such as author visits, reading competitions, and library activities, promoting a strong reading culture and a lifelong love of reading.
