This exciting course allows students to continue building upon and developing the knowledge learnt at KS3 in Design & Technology, as well as giving them the opportunity to focus in greater depth on at least one material area.

The course aims to allow students the opportunity to be creative and innovative whilst having an increased awareness and understanding of real-life experiences in design, development and manufacturing industries. It also helps them to understand the planning and organisation of time and resources when managing a project. Students will learn about important issues that affect design in the wider world such as sustainability, global issues and user-centred design. In addition to which, they will reinforce their basic knowledge of a range of materials and components, including papers and boards, timber, metals, polymers (plastics) and textile fibres and fabrics, and also smart materials that respond to change in light, temperature or pressure, all of which can be used to create products.

Curriculum Termly Breakdown by Year

Year 10

Term	Unit of Work	Assessment
Autumn 1	Decorative techniques module: Students will have the chance to learn and experiment with a range of decorative techniques.	End of topic exam.
Autumn 2	Fibres and Fabrics Module: Students will cover a range of theory about fibres and fabrics. They will carry out experiments / practicals and complete a range of paperwork based tasks.	End of topic exam.
Spring 1	Construction techniques module: Students learn and produce samples of a range of different ways to join fabrics, insert fastenings, add shape to fabric, etc. Core Theory: Students will each be given core theory booklet, 1 lesson a week will be dedicated to completing this.	End of topic exam.
Spring 2	Applying Knowledge module / NEA practice: Students will be given a design and make task and will use the knowledge and skills gained over the year to complete a practice NEA.	Teacher assessment.
Summer 1	Applying Knowledge module/NEA practice: Students will be given a design and make task and will use the knowledge and skills gained over the year to complete a practice NEA.	Teacher assessment.
Summer 2	NEA work: Students will be given their NEA topics (worth 50%) of final grade. They will start completing section A and will continue in Year 11.

Autumn 1	NEA – continue with NEA contexts. Create PowerPoint document for NEA. Explore project format, use of real time evidence and conclusion writing. Further research – write up investigations. Present and evaluate findings, key requirements, and initial design ideas supported by research. Development of chosen ideas. Final design. Research on going where appropriate and necessary. Core booklet – revisit core knowledge. Use of flash cards to support revision. Short questions from past papers.	NEA. Short questions in class activities – peer marking.
Autumn 2	NEA continues. Final idea. Sampling techniques – practical making activities. Final design – technical specification. Pattern drafting – use of CAD. Start making – pattern development / final pattern making / prototyping. Mock examination preparation – revise core and specialist knowledge of fibres and fabrics. Use flash cards / past papers. Develop / explore examination techniques and skills. Practice short and long examination questions – timed sessions.	NEA. Long questions. Question and answer group activities. Mock exam.
Spring 1	NEA continues. Final pattern development and trial decorative techniques. Evaluation and further development if necessary. Final paper pattern and decoration confirmed. Making.	NEA.
