At EBS, careers education is a central part of school life. We provide independent, impartial guidance to help students of all ages explore their strengths and passions, and to plan for their future.
In Years 10 and 11, students focus on preparing for life after GCSEs. Using our online platform Unifrog, they explore potential pathways, including Sixth Form, college courses and apprenticeships, and the subjects or qualifications required for different careers. We also provide opportunities to meet employers, training providers and local colleges, giving students real-world insight into the world of work. All students complete Year 10 work experience and meet our independent Careers Advisor to discuss their future plans.
At GCSE, all students study both English Language and English Literature. These two qualifications are taught alongside one another, allowing students to develop a broad range of reading, writing and analytical skills while exploring a variety of engaging texts. Many of the skills required for both courses overlap, enabling students to strengthen their understanding of language, structure and meaning across different forms of writing.
Throughout the course, students study a diverse selection of literary texts, developing their ability to analyse writers’ ideas and methods while also refining their own writing for different purposes and audiences. They learn how to communicate clearly and effectively, build persuasive arguments and interpret the meaning and impact of language in both fiction and non-fiction texts.
The content for both GCSEs is introduced during Year 10, giving students the opportunity to revisit the texts and consolidate their understanding in Year 11. This approach allows students to strengthen their knowledge of key themes, characters and quotations, which are essential for success in the final examinations.
To support students’ progress, regular assessment weeks and mock examinations are built into the course. These provide valuable opportunities for practice and feedback, helping students develop confidence in their exam technique. Above all, the course aims to foster a genuine enjoyment of English while equipping students with the communication and critical thinking skills needed for further study and for life beyond school.
