KS4 GCSE MFL: French

Course Overview

Embarking on a GCSE in French is an exciting opportunity to develop valuable communication skills while broadening your understanding of the world and the cultures of French-speaking countries.

Building on the foundations established at Key Stage 3, students strengthen their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills while expanding their vocabulary and deepening their understanding of key grammatical structures. Students may choose to study one or more of the languages introduced at Key Stage 3, allowing them to continue developing their linguistic confidence.

Students follow the AQA GCSE (9–1) course in French, German and/or Spanish, exploring a range of engaging topics that reflect everyday life, popular culture and the wider world. Through these themes, students learn to express their ideas and opinions with increasing confidence while developing the ability to understand authentic spoken and written language.

Alongside developing linguistic skills, the course also encourages students to explore the cultures, traditions and perspectives of French-speaking countries. This helps students gain a broader cultural awareness and a deeper appreciation of the diversity of the global community.

Studying French not only strengthens communication and critical thinking skills but also provides a strong foundation for further language study at A-Level and opens the door to a wide range of future academic and career opportunities.
