At EBS, careers education is a central part of school life. We provide independent, impartial guidance to help students of all ages explore their strengths and passions, and to plan for their future.
In Years 10 and 11, students focus on preparing for life after GCSEs. Using our online platform Unifrog, they explore potential pathways, including Sixth Form, college courses and apprenticeships, and the subjects or qualifications required for different careers. We also provide opportunities to meet employers, training providers and local colleges, giving students real-world insight into the world of work. All students complete Year 10 work experience and meet our independent Careers Advisor to discuss their future plans.
At EBS, we believe that students deserve a creative and ambitious Mathematics curriculum, rich in skills and knowledge, which excites curiosity and prepares them well for everyday life and future employment. Mathematics is a subject that underpins many aspects of the modern world, and our aim is to ensure that all students develop confidence and competence in applying mathematical ideas.
Building on the foundations established at Key Stage 3, the Key Stage 4 curriculum is broad and varied, covering topics across the full GCSE grade range from 1 to 9. Students extend their understanding of core mathematical concepts and apply these skills to increasingly challenging problems, enabling them to develop both accuracy and confidence in their work while securing the best grades possible at GCSE.
Throughout the course, students develop fluency in the fundamentals of mathematics through regular practice and the exploration of increasingly complex problems. They are encouraged to reason mathematically by following lines of enquiry, identifying patterns and relationships, and developing arguments, justifications and proofs using precise mathematical language.
Students also strengthen their problem-solving skills by applying mathematics to a wide range of routine and non-routine problems. They learn how to break down complex problems into manageable steps, communicate their reasoning clearly and persevere when seeking solutions.
In Year 11, the curriculum is structured so that key topics are completed early, allowing students to focus on exam practice and targeted revision. Through the use of past papers and regular feedback, students develop strong examination techniques and address any gaps in their understanding. Overall, the course aims to foster both enjoyment and appreciation of mathematics while preparing students for further study, apprenticeships and future careers.
