At EBS, careers education is a central part of school life. We provide independent, impartial guidance to help students of all ages explore their strengths and passions, and to plan for their future.
In Years 10 and 11, students focus on preparing for life after GCSEs. Using our online platform Unifrog, they explore potential pathways, including Sixth Form, college courses and apprenticeships, and the subjects or qualifications required for different careers. We also provide opportunities to meet employers, training providers and local colleges, giving students real-world insight into the world of work. All students complete Year 10 work experience and meet our independent Careers Advisor to discuss their future plans.
In Media Studies, students will develop their ability to think critically about the many forms of media they consume in their daily lives. They will consider language and representation in print news, advertising and TV. In addition, they will build their knowledge of the economic, social, cultural and political contexts of the media industry. Furthermore, they will consider audience impact and how the media reflects society as a whole.
The first main area of study is ‘Television and Promoting Media’, where students will be examining contemporary and historic television products. They will also analyse media products from a conglomerate producer, looking at how film products are marketed.
The second main area of study is ‘Music and News’, where students will engage with one in-depth study of a magazine, and also analyse language and representation in music videos and radio. In addition, they will carry out an in-depth study of a national newspaper, including print, online, social and participatory media.
Finally, the students will apply their knowledge and understanding of media language and representations in making their own media products, to express and communicate meaning to an intended audience.
The course is to run for the first time in September 2026 and further information will be provided at the start of the next academic year.
