At EBS, careers education is a central part of school life. We provide independent, impartial guidance to help students of all ages explore their strengths and passions, and to plan for their future.
In Years 10 and 11, students focus on preparing for life after GCSEs. Using our online platform Unifrog, they explore potential pathways, including Sixth Form, college courses and apprenticeships, and the subjects or qualifications required for different careers. We also provide opportunities to meet employers, training providers and local colleges, giving students real-world insight into the world of work. All students complete Year 10 work experience and meet our independent Careers Advisor to discuss their future plans.
Studying Music at GCSE provides students with the opportunity to develop their musical creativity, performance skills and understanding of a wide range of musical styles. The course combines practical and theoretical learning, allowing students to perform, compose and analyse music while gaining a deeper appreciation of how music is created and experienced.
Building on the foundations established at Key Stage 3, students develop their skills in listening, performing and composing. They explore a variety of musical genres and traditions through the study of set works, which may include pieces such as Killer Queen by Queen, Beethoven’s Pathétique Sonata, and music from stage and screen including Defying Gravity and Star Wars by John Williams. Through the analysis of these works, students learn how musical elements such as melody, harmony, rhythm and structure are used to create different musical effects.
Performance is an important part of the course, with students developing both solo and ensemble performance skills. They also create their own original compositions, including a free composition and a set brief composition, allowing them to demonstrate their creativity and understanding of musical techniques.
Throughout the course, students strengthen their listening and analytical skills through regular written assessments and practice exam questions. In Year 11, the focus shifts towards completing coursework elements and preparing for the final listening examination.
Music at GCSE encourages creativity, collaboration and self-expression, while also developing discipline and confidence. It provides a strong foundation for further study at A-Level and supports future pathways in music, performing arts, media and the wider creative industries.
